Research Methods

Within the research program both physiological and psychological data are studied by quantitative and qualitative research methods. These include standard cardiovascular and psychometric parameters, depth psychology analysis (including psychological morphology) methods and chronobiological time series analysis of various psychophysiological parameters (e.g. skin potential, skin resistance, EMG) incl. HRV.

Past Research Projects

Determination of individual factors for the optimisation of receptive-musictherapeutical interventions concerning diseases of the cardiovascular system

This study focuses on the development of new receptive music therapy
interventions for the adjuvant therapy of essential hypertension,
rhythm disorders and chronic insomnia.

One goal of the study was the determination of the relevant factors responsible for the effectiveness of music therapy interventions in ambulatory conditions.

Three diploma thesis have been written as part of the study:

Effects of a combination of NLPt and musictherapy

Analyses of the effect of special, functional music in the treatment of hypertension

Development of a multi-factorial model of
the effect of music with emphasis on the application
in the medical and entertainment fields

Project:
Development and application of special receptive musictherapy for the treatment of outpatients with depressive disorders

The study was supported by the Austrian National Bank Jubiläumsfonds.

Special Music Programs for Inpatients
Special music programs were developed for inpatient in hospitals and rehabilitation clinics.
The research phase and pilot project was completed and the programs are now available.

Furthermore the research program has initiated an international project which will focus on the integration of MusicMedicine and receptive music therapy intervention in the the area of psycho-geriatrics.

In Salzburg, the PMU MusicMedicine Research Program contributes to projects which are supported by the Forum Gesundes Österreich concerned with the development and evaluation of musical interventions for the prevention and enhancement of work health.

Concerning the research activities in clinics in Salzburg, the research program cooperates with the association saludArt.e.v.

"Mozart & Science", co-organized by the PMU MusicMedicine Research Program will take place in November 2010. .

Focus of this interdisciplinary research program is the research, development and evaluation of new therapy concepts focussing on music-based auditory stimulation for the integrative treatment of psychosomatic diseases and disorders.		Zentrales Thema dieses interdisziplinären Forschungsprogramms sind die Erforschung, Entwicklung und Evaluierung neuer therapeutischer Konzepte mit dem Schwerpunkt auf musik-basierter auditiver Stimulation, u.a. im Bereich psychischer Störungen und psychosomatisch bedingter Erkrankungen.

HRV.		Forschungsmethoden Das Forschungsprogramm arbeitet mit physiologischen und psychologischen Daten und setzt quantitative und qualitative Forschungsinstrumente ein. Diese umfassen kardiovaskuläre und psychometrische Standardparameter, tiefenpsychologische Analysemethoden (psychologische Morphologie) und chronobiologische Zeitreihenanalysen (u.a. für die Parameter Hautpotential, Hautwiderstand, EMG) und HRV.
Current Research Projects The Effects of Auditory Stimulation Therapy for the Treatment of Vascular Variabilty Disorders Vascular variability anomalies (VVAs) lead to unusal low or high blood pressure. When VVAs persist for several 7-day spans, they become vascular variability disorders, VVDs, with a very high risk of heart disease. With the correct auditory stimulation, it is possible to restore the regulation of the autonomic nervous system which plays a central role in the genesis of hypo- and hypertension. In this study, we will explore the immediated effects of a variety of treament options for VVDs and evaluate their long term efficacy. Recruitment of study participants: Ongoing		Aktuelle Forschungsprojekte Die Wirkungen auditiver Stimulationstherapie bei der Behandlung Vaskulärer Variabilitätsstörungen Vaskuläre Variabilitätsanomalien (VVAs) führen zu teilweise erheblichen Blutdruckschwankungen. Kommt es zu anhaltenden vaskulären Variabilitätsanomalien, entstehen vaskuläre Variabilitätsstörungen (VVDs), die mit einem erhöhten kardiovaskulären Risiko einhergehen. Mit Hilfe individualisierter auditiver Stimulation kann die Regulationsfähigkeit des autonomen Nervensytstems, die bei der Entstehung von zu hohen oder zu niedrigen Blutdruckwerten eine zentrale Rolle spielt, positiv beeinflußt werden. Im Rahmen dieser Studie untersuchen wir die kurz- und langfristigen Wirkungen verschiedener Behandlungsoptionen bei vaskulären Variabilitätsstörungen. Anmeldung zur Studienteilnahme ab 10.01.2011

Abgeschlossene Forschungsprojekte Ermittlung individueller Faktoren zur Optimierung rezeptiv-musiktherapeutischer Interventionen in der Akut- und Rehabilitationsmedizin Ziel der Studie: Entwicklung neuer rezeptiver musiktherapeutischer Behandlungsverfahren zur adjuvanten Therapie bei essentieller Hypertonie, Arrhythmie und Insomnie. Nachweis der Wirksamkeit resp. der Ermittlung der relevanten Faktoren, die Art und Intensität der Wirkung unter ambulanten Bedingungen determinieren. Im Rahmen der Studie entstanden drei Diplomarbeiten: Auswirkungen einer Kombination von NLPt und rezeptiver Musiktherapie Untersuchung der Wirkung von spezieller, funktioneller Musik bei der Behandlung von Hypertonie Entwicklung eines Modells der multifaktoriellen Musikwirkung mit dem Schwerpunkt auf Anwendungen in den Bereichen Medizin und Entertainment Die Studie wurde vom Jubiläumsfonds der Österreichischen Nationalbank unterstützt. Projekt: Anwendung spezieller rezeptiver Musiktherapie bei der ambulanten Behandlung von depressiven Störungen Um die Funktionsweisen der psychophysiologischen Wirkungen von spezieller rezeptiver Musiktherapie bei der Behandlung von depressiven Störungen differenziert nachweisen zu können, werden bei dieser Studie die mittelfristigen Wirkungen gezielter rezeptiv-musiktherapeutischer Interventionen untersucht und der Behandlungserfolg speziell entwickelter Musiktherapie-Programme mit Hilfe psychologischer und physiologischer Testverfahren überprüft. Die Studie wurde vom Jubiläumsfonds der Österreichischen Nationalbank unterstützt.

Forschungskooperationen Programme für Krankenhäuser und Reha-Kliniken Spezielle Musikprogramme für stationäre Patienten in Krankenhäusern und Reha-Kliniken. Das Forschungsprojekt ist beendet und die Programme stehen zur Verfügung. Fakultät Mannheim, Universität Heidelberg Das PMU Forschungsprogramm Musik-Medizin ist Mitglied der I.M.A.R.A.A. International Music & Art Research Association Austria, einer österreichischen Forschungsinitiative für interdisziplinäre Musikwirkungsforschung. Darüber hinaus hat das Forschungsprogramm ein internationales Projekt initiiert, das sich mit der Integration von musik-medizinischen und rezeptiv-musiktherapeutischen Interventionen im Bereich der Geriatrie befassen wird. Auf lokaler Ebene beteiligt sich das Forschungsprogramm u.a. an Projekten, die vom Forum Gesundes Österreich gefördert werden und bei denen es u.a. um die Entwicklung und Evaluierung verschiedener Musik- Interventionsformen zur Prävention und Verbesserung der Arbeitsgesundheit geht. Für die Forschungsaktivitäten im Bereich der Salzburger Kliniken kooperiert das Forschungsprogramm mit dem Verein saludArt.e.v. Im November 2010 findet der internationale Kongress "Mozart & Science" statt, an dessen Organisation das Forschungsprogramm Musik-Medizin beteiligt ist und zu dem über 50 Wissenschaftler zu einem interdisziplinären Dialog zur Musikwirkungsforschung in der Medizin eingeladen wurden.
